A disconnected weekend
10th -11th October 2020
The lockdown and work from home routine were just getting on the nerve and this 2-day weekend getaway was something I was dearly looking forward to.
I have a history of liquid damaging Phones and Macs be it with water or sometimes Rum+Coke, and this trip was just another disaster waiting to happen 🤦🏻♂️
So we started riding on Saturday morning and just when we were entering Coorg, the rain gods had a plan for me (read my iPhone). It started off as a drizzle and turned into a full drama of rain and mountain twists. As someone who loves rains and mountains, I kept riding with my phone hooked onto the ram mount showing me directions while getting soaked
By the time I reached the resort, my phone was on a restart loop….it would start, flash a white screen and restart again. I was worried owing to my history of electronics and water, tensed and sad that I was no longer able to capture the beauty of Coorg.
An hour later I let it go, this was a trip I was so looking forward to and I couldn't let my phone screw it. I spent the weekend with no phone, no internet, no connectivity.
I was instead taken into the surroundings, drawn into having more conversation with other bikers, soaking in the views and sounds of nature more with my senses rather than trying to capture it with perfection on a camera.
After deleting all social media apps from my phone for over 5 months, this weekend was just the best thing waiting to happen - The much-needed disconnect.
I got back home on Sunday evening, for once my phone started normally and I immediately plugged into my Mac. What I found out was - it wasn’t water damage this time 🙈. The culprit was iOS14. I updated my phone to iOS 14 a week before my road-trip and it crashed somehow in sync with the rain. Updated it to the next version, I and iPhone lived happily after that
